The Second City Brings Comedy to Forest

Actors from The Second City, a comedy group originally based in Chicago, performed Fully Loaded for the Woodberry Forest School student body as part of the Woodberry Forest Artist Series.

The show included comedic sketches, improvisations based on audience suggestions, and social and political commentary conveyed through humor. Backed by a pianist/sound technician, the six actors played characters that ranged from texting teenagers to cowboys on the open range, from dancing train passengers to elderly uncles. Every sketch earned the enthusiastic approval of an audience ready to enjoy a night of comedy. "We were amazed at the boys' energy," one of the ensemble members said. "They laughed at different jokes than our typical audience does."

The October 1, 2015, performance was followed the next day by workshops offered to interested students. Gathering on Purrington Stage, young actors tried improvisational games and learned about the career paths open to members of The Second City.

The Second City began in 1959 and has been a career-starting point for many prominent performers including Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Stephen Colbert, and Chris Farley.
