The Game & Bonfire

The annual football game between Woodberry Forest School and Episcopal High School is one of the oldest and most storied high school rivalries in the South, dating back to 1901. This fierce yet friendly competition has captivated generations of students, players, alumni, and parents from both boarding schools, becoming a defining tradition that unites the Woodberry community across time and geography. Known simply as “The Game,” it is more than just a contest on the field—it’s a celebration of school pride, sportsmanship, and enduring legacy. In the days leading up to kickoff, students gather around a spirited bonfire, igniting their enthusiasm and rallying together in anticipation. The energy is palpable as the entire campus comes alive with orange and black, and the bonds of brotherhood grow even stronger through shared tradition and collective excitement.

Senior Shake

The Senior Shake is a meaningful Woodberry tradition that celebrates our graduating seniors as they prepare to leave the Tiger Nation. This event provides faculty, staff, and underclassmen a formal moment to congratulate the seniors, recognize their achievements, and wish them well on the journey ahead. More than a handshake, it symbolizes respect, gratitude, and the lasting bonds formed at Woodberry. It honors each senior’s legacy and the values they carry forward.

Tie Cutting

The Tie Cutting ceremony is a beloved annual tradition at Woodberry Forest School, symbolizing the transition of new boys into full-fledged members of the Woodberry community. As part of this rite of passage, cheerleaders ceremonially cut the black ties worn by new students, signifying the end of their introductory journey and the beginning of their identity as “old boys.” In place of the black ties, students receive the iconic orange-and-black school tie, a proud emblem of their belonging, growth, and commitment to the values of Woodberry. This spirited event not only celebrates personal milestones but also reinforces the deep sense of camaraderie and tradition that defines life at Woodberry.

This intimate setting encourages deeper relationships, mentorship, and reflection, reinforcing the values of trust and support that are central to the Woodberry experience.
