WHY WOODBERRY? An International Student Perspective

Looking to Attend Boarding School in the U.S.?

International Student Office

Thank you for your interest in Woodberry Forest School, a top private boarding school for boys in the U.S. state of Virginia.

Woodberry Forest School is proud to be home to leaders, learners, and citizens from around the world. Our international students enhance the education of the entire student body, as they provide a diversity of thought, culture, and perspective.
International students who attend Woodberry often see the prep school’s honor system as a differentiator from other schools, both home and abroad. This community-wide pledge to not lie, cheat, or steal creates a system of trust and safety. The honor system affirms that Woodberry values character development and personal growth as much as academic rigor.
Woodberry currently boasts more than fifty students from over twenty countries in our student body. International students who choose Woodberry will benefit from an engaging, immersive cultural experience, which will push boys to become well-rounded in academics, athletics, and arts.

As a school, Woodberry believes cultural education engages all students. We celebrate our international culture in a variety of ways:
    • International holiday celebrations, such as Lunar New Year, complete with authentic Chinese food, student musical performances, and an all-school assembly.
    • Summer programming opportunities to travel to experience international cultures, history, and service work.
    • International cuisine (Bulgogi, pho, chicken curry, etc.) served at the dining hall.
    • Dim Sum Nights attended by domestic and international Woodberry students.
    • International Forum club, which Woodberry’s international students, along with others interested in learning more about global cultures, to meetings where they discuss current affairs, enjoy international cuisine, or hear from guest speakers.
    • International authors, artists, poets, and athletes are integrated into Woodberry curriculum.
    • Off-campus trips to cultural events, ethnic restaurants, and movies.

The International Student Office at Woodberry exists to provide:

    (1)   Visa facilitation: The International Student Office will handle all facets of the visa administration during a student’s time here, from issuing the I-20 at the beginning of the process to transferring it to the student’s college or university of choice at the end of their Woodberry career.

    (2)   Orientation: Woodberry welcomes new international students and U.S. citizens who live abroad to participate in International Orientation before their first year begins. While it is important for international students to be prepared for American cultures and customs, we find it just as important for American students to be oriented to learn and embrace international cultures and traditions as well.

    (3)   Advocacy: While each student is assigned an advisor to help with day-to-day issues that arise, the International Student Office also serves to provide an extra resource and advocate for international students.
