Walker Building's Baker Family Wing Dedicated

The generosity of the Baker family of Jacksonville, Florida, was recognized on Friday, November 8, 2013, when the Baker Family Wing of the Walker Building was dedicated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. The newly named wing, originally built in 1905 to serve as the school's gymnasium, now houses Woodberry Forest School's post office, school store, several student life offices, and dormitory space.

John Baker ’66, a prefect and an outstanding student during his time at the Forest, returned to Woodberry to serve as a trustee 1993 – 2002 and from 2007 - today. During his service on the board, John chaired the Our Strong Band campaign. As a result of his tireless commitment, Woodberry successfully concluded the most ambitious campaign in school history at the end of last year.

According to Director of Development and Assistant Headmaster Catherine Wharton, "The Walker Building is, to many, the heart and soul of the Woodberry campus. John, who agrees wholeheartedly with this sentiment, has directed his extraordinarily generous campaign gift to Walker’s renovation. The board of trustees voted unanimously to name the west wing of the Walker Building to honor John Baker, his two sons, Ted ’96 and John ’03, along with Ted ’53 and Tom ’77, in perpetuity."

Renovations to the Walker Building, to include the addition of a portico at the building's western entrance, will commence in 2015.
