Tigers Shoot for Third Straight Prep League Title
The 2002 edition of the Woodberry Forest varsity football team arrived on campus August 24th eager to get to work. After a year of working hard in the weight room and on the track, the Tigers are hungry for their chance to play.

"We are young and inexperienced but have shown a willingness to work hard," said Head Coach Bill Davis.

Coach Davis is beginning his twelfth year as head coach at Woodberry, and his teams have a record of 30-6 over the past four years, including a 16-2 record the past two seasons.

The team is led by senior captains Will Martin (Greenville, NC), Eric Armstrong (Georgetown, SC), and Conner Gentil (Richmond, VA). Martin and Gentil return as proven veterans on offense at running back and defense at defensive back and linebacker respectively. Armstrong will head up a solid group on the offensive and defensive lines.

Twenty-one juniors join the team in addition to several underclassmen. The juniors have a chance to earn starting spots and playing time at almost every defensive position and several on offense.

On offense, in addition to Martin and Armstrong, seniors Akin Oyalowo (Bowie, MD), a running back; Chas Collins (Spotsylvania, VA), a center; and Garrett Ramsey (Richmond, VA), a tackle, lead a group with speed, strength, and experience. Juniors Elliott Farless (Merry Hill, NC) and William Cage (Falfurrias, TX) and senior Wade Scales (Greenville, NC) will share time at wide receiver. New boy sophomore Sheldon Alexander (Orange, VA), and juniors Caylor Mark (Charlotte, NC) and Gunner Coil (Purcellville, VA) battle for the starting quarterback spot.

Defensively the Tigers have holes to fill at linebacker and defensive back. A young and talented group of players vies for each spot. Si Sitterson moves from corner to strong safety, and is joined in the defensive backfield by junior free safety Elliott Farless, junior corner George Purrington, and new boy sophomore corner Nelson Seabrook. Gentil, Oyalowo, senior Greg Schwartz, and junior Spotty Robins form the core of the linebacker group. Up front, senior Jay Henderson, and juniors Richard Pate and Bowen Chapman join Armstrong.

Two early scrimmages against Sidwell Friends and Blue Ridge / Mercersburg have helped the Tigers find elements of the game to work on in preparation for the season opener against Blair on September 14th.
