Alum Speaks on Substance Abuse Prevention

Will Straughan '92 visited Woodberry Forest School on October 17 - 20, 2017, to speak with students, faculty, and parents about national trends in substance abuse and about the strategies boys can use to make healthy choices.

Will works for Freedom from Chemical Dependency, an international, nonprofit provider of substance abuse prevention services. FCD is part of the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation.

Will visits Woodberry twice a year for meetings with students. On Friday evening, he spoke with third- and fourth-form parents as part of the school’s parents’ weekend program, focusing on the risks associated with early exposure to addictive substances and effective methods of prevention.

His time at Woodberry also included small group meetings with students and a short address during the school’s weekly assembly. After speaking about his experiences as a Woodberry student, Will, who is also a professional musician, played a song he wrote shortly after entering recovery for alcohol and drug addiction.
