  • Third-Form Year

During the third-form year you will be adjusting to life at Woodberry and college probably seems pretty far away. You will want to work hard in and out of class and become fully engaged in the lifelong learning opportunities here at Woodberry. The college counseling staff will meet with you during the fall to give you tips for success and to introduce ourselves to you. During the fall and spring we welcome and encourage you to meet with college representatives when they come to campus. Additionally, we are all available if you have questions at this point in your high school career.

Here are some things you can do to fully engage in life at Woodberry:

    • Get involved with as many clubs and organizations as you can.
    • Get to know your teachers, dorm masters, advisers, and coaches.
    • Try everything (sports, art, drama, publications, academic teams).
    • Develop good study skills and organizational habits.
    • Introduce yourself to the college counselors.

  • Fourth-Form Year

What you do in the classroom sophomore year strongly influences the placement options you will have available your junior and senior years. As always, feel free to ask us questions as you begin thinking about the college process. There are college representatives coming to campus throughout September and October during lunch and after dinner; take the time to start learning about what these schools are looking for and come meet the representatives. You will take the PSAT for the first time in October of your sophomore year.

In the middle of your fourth-form year you will meet in small groups to learn about Naviance, an online resource, and the college counseling process at Woodberry. Take some time to become familiar with Naviance and use the college search function to find colleges that might interest you. Pay attention to the scattergrams for each college, as they show you a history of application results for Woodberry students. If you plan to play athletics at the collegiate level, many sports start recruiting as early as sophomore year. Talk to your coaches and college counselors if this is something you want to pursue. No matter what your future plans may be, use your summers wisely to work, do community service, pursue a passion, have an internship, and visit college campuses.

  • Fifth-Year Form

The fifth-form year is when the college process really takes off. In September and October, you will have the chance to meet with admissions representatives on Woodberry’s campus. You will also take the PSAT for the last time. In February, you will take part in a required workshop with admission officers from colleges and universities. During the winter you will take the SAT and/or ACT for the first time. Considering paying the extra fee to receive a copy of your test booklet and results since this can help you focus your continued test preparation. We strongly recommend that students take the SAT or the ACT a second time in the spring. Remember that the school year is generally packed with activity and seniors, especially those who are involved with the play or with athletic teams, have very little time to get away from campus to visit colleges – long winter weekend, spring break, and summer are the best time to get to college campuses.

In the winter, you and your counselor will develop your preliminary list of colleges. This initial list will give you a good foundation from which to build. Expect to be busy during the summer between the junior and senior year. Visit college campuses and finish community service hours. We also encourage you to come back to campus with most of your applications completed and welcome questions over the summer months. In addition, those of you interested in pursuing athletics, arts, theatre, merit scholarships should do the bulk of the preparation over the summer. Woodberry offers SAT test prep during the winter and spring trimesters.

  • Sixth-Form Year

By the time you return for your senior year at Woodberry, you should have narrowed your college list to six to ten schools, and you should have completed a significant portion of your applications. We welcome your questions over the summer and are happy to take a look at your essays. You will meet with your college counselor shortly after your arrival in the fall to discuss the progress that you made over the summer and to begin working on other aspects of the application process. For the best outcomes, it is important that you take charge of meeting deadlines and communication with us and with your parents – students are often the only person colleges will be communicating with regarding your application. This part of the process is individualized and we are here to help you and your parents from completing and submitting applications to offering advice when final admission decisions have been made.
