Kansas City Team Wins Spring Barbecue Competition

Woodberry Forest School's Spring Barbecue, which saw sixth-formers preparing regional specialties for the rest of the student body during an all-day cookout, ended with a victory for the Kansas City team. The competition was judged by three Woodberry parents: professional chef Sarah Deigl and pitmasters James Carrington and Doc King ’79. Other barbecue styles included Eastern North Carolina, Western North Carolina,Virginia, and Texas.

Though only one member of the winning team -- one of its faculty advisors, native Kansan Jacob Geiger ’05 -- had ever visited the Sunflower State, and the team despaired of winning early on when their meat temperature rose too quickly, the group ended up producing a beef brisket notable for its tenderness and the flavor of its rub.

"Thanks to the efforts of the Class of 2017, the barbecue competition is reinstated now as a special senior class event," said Ben Hale, whose efforts returned the event to the spring calendar after a two-year hiatus. He told the seniors: "You started a new tradition."
