Alumni Show True Tiger Spirit

True Tiger spirit was in evidence in January, 2017, when alumni placed friendly “wagers” on the national championship football game between Alabama and Clemson. Class agent Doug Monroe ’74 conceived and initiated an effort to set up a GoFundMe account and challenged his classmates to place a $20 wager on the outcome of the game. The proceeds would benefit Pat Calhoun ’73, a former senior prefect who suffered a traumatic brain injury in his thirties and has faced some challenges since then. Through the years, Pat's close Woodberry friends have stayed in touch with him and kept him involved with the institutions he loves.  One of those is Clemson, where his dad was an alum and where he grew up going to games.

After Doug, also a senior prefect, reached out to classmates and other Tigers on campus at the time, John Nash '72, Bob Hudson '73 and Vernon Geddy '75 all rallied their classmates to participate. In the end, 140 members of the classes of 1972, 1973, 1974, and 1975 had raised  $6,100 for Pat.

Pat embodies the same values today that he espoused as senior prefect for the Class of 1973, and he has maintained a close relationship with his Tiger brothers and the Woodberry community.  Indeed, Pat asked that half of the gift be given to his alma mater.
