Students Uncover Unwritten History

Sam Carter ’16 and William von Hassell ’16 attended the Montpelier Archeology Field School this summer. They assisted with excavations around the Orange County, Virginia, mansion of President James Madison with the goal of discovering changes in the landscape during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. William von Hassell discovered a 19th century glass button, in all probability that of an enslaved female. Shown are Sam, Woodberry Forest School board member Joe Grills, and William.
