JV Football Comes Back to Win vs Norfolk 21-14

The JV football team finished a 12 day 4 game stretch with an exciting come from behind 21 -14 road victory over Norfolk Academy on Saturday.  The Bulldogs took advantage of an early Woodberry fumble and drove the ball 40 yards for the first touchdown of the game with 3:50 remaining in the first quarter.  After a failed two point conversion attempt, the score was 6-0 in favor of Norfolk.  Norfolk's offense came right back on the field after they recovered the ensuing onside kick.  They moved the ball quickly down the field and scored their second touchdown of the game just 5 seconds into the second quarter.  A 2 point conversion extended their lead to 14 - 0.

The Tigers started their second offensive possession on their own 40 and pick up 2 first downs.  Woodberry then had an offensive pass interference call against them which put them in a difficult 1st and 25.  On the next play Alex Hagood connected with Robert Spilman on a pass play for a first down.  From there, Woodberry moved  the ball and Alex finished the drive with a 1 yard quarterback sneak.  Layton Brown's extra point made the score 14-7 with 3 minutes remaining in the half.

On the opening possession of the second half, Woodberry turned the ball over once again, but the defense forced the Bulldogs to punt.  Norfolk executed an excellent punt and the ball rolled out of bounds on the 4 yard line.  The next play, the Tigers struck big.  The offensive line opened up a nice hole and sprung Ade Oyalowo for 96 yards and a score.  The extra point knotted the game at 14-14 with 6 minutes remaining in the third quarter.  The Tigers' defense came up big for the rest of the game.  John Abutu made a couple big hits while David Sherrerd-Smith and Phil Rogers shut down Norfolk's inside running game.

The game was stilled tied with about 7 minutes left in the game when Woodberry faced a 4th and inches on their own 21 yard line.  Electing to go for it, the offense converted the first down.  Ade struck again on the next play.  This time it was a 78 yard touchdown run to give the Tigers their first lead of the game.  The teams exchanged possessions before Caffery Jackson sealed the victory for Woodberry with an interception.

Woodberry improved their record to 5 - 0 - 1 and hosts EHS Friday for their final game of the season.
