Record opener for varsity golf

In a rematch of last year’s state champions and runners-up, the Tigers again came out victorious with a resounding 265–286 win over Potomac. Today’s team total of fifteen under par (-15) sets a school record for the lowest 18-hole team score at Woodberry Forest, surpassed only by the -18 score two years ago at the Prep League championship at Old Trail Golf Club.

Five Tigers shot under the par of 70, another first. Leading the way was senior co-captain James Doyle, who fired a five-under 65 to earn medalist honors, tying a school record held by three others, for the lowest 18-hole individual score at WFS GC.

Closely following James Doyle were fellow senior co-captain Henry Cardwell and fourth-former Walker Shull, with a pair of four-under 66’s. Rounding out the scoring was junior Hayes Corcell with a two-under-par (68). Hudson Doyle was the fifth sub-par round (69), while James Gavin (74), Will Guthrie (74), and George Griffin (76) also participated.

With two wins this weekend over Blue Ridge and Potomac, Woodberry extends its dual-match winning streak to 42, four shy of the school record 46 set between 1995 and 1999.
