STEM Racing Team Formula Forest Takes on Nationals

Earlier this month, Woodberry’s Formula Forest team proved that the best way to learn physics is to build it. As part of our hands-on STEM Racing Science Thesis Seminar, these students spent months in the lab 3D-printing components and wind-tunnel testing aerodynamics to create the perfect CO2-powered racer.

That hard work paid off in Charlotte at the National Finals, where the Tigers faced off against 26 of the best schools in the country.  In a sport where physics meets focus, these 1/20th scale cars hit top speeds in a high-pressure knockout tournament where every millisecond counts. Building on an 8th-place finish from last year, the team’s goal was clear: land in the top three and punch their ticket to the World Finals.

The Tigers’ performance was their best yet, clocking the 4th fastest car in the nation, reaching the knockout tournament semifinals, and landing a spot in the Top 4 for their verbal presentations. While a late-submission penalty ultimately bumped them to 4th place overall – just one agonizing spot away from the World Finals invite – the team walked away with the Sportsmanship Award and a lot of lessons learned. The Formula Forest team is already back in the lab, analyzing the data and turning this year's momentum into next year’s title run.
