List of 5 frequently asked questions.

  • Q. Who can qualify for financial assistance?

That answer depends on a number of factors: income, assets, obligations, number of dependents, and ages of parents. Consequently, families with incomes of $150,000 or higher may qualify for financial assistance.
Woodberry Forest School follows the financial aid guidelines established by the School and Student Service for Financial Aid (SSS) in determining need. After parents submit their completed questionnaires, SSS reviews the information provided and uses a formula to calculate how much a family can afford to spend on a child’s education. The formula takes into account the costs of housing, food, clothing, transportation, insurance, and other nondiscretionary expenses that all families have.
Woodberry Forest School receives a recommendation from SSS suggesting a financial aid range for each family. SSS also sends the school a copy of the information submitted to the service. The Woodberry Forest financial aid office also asks families to submit a copy of the current year’s tax returns. After all the information has been assembled, the committee makes the final decision on the particular aid package the school may offer a student. All financial information provided to Woodberry Forest remains strictly confidential and is used solely for evaluation of the application.

  • Q. What types of assistance are available?

    A. Financial assistance may come in the form of grants and/or loans. Direct grants do not have to be repaid; loans are paid back over an extended period of time at a favorable interest rate. In addition to funds available from the school, families may be able to obtain educational loans from banks or other financial institutions. A monthly payment plan is offered as well. The school also has some part-time jobs for students, but since the hours are limited, as is the time available for such employment, earnings can be counted on for spending money only, and not for payment of tuition and fees.
  • Q. How does one apply for financial assistance?

    A. Decisions about admission to Woodberry Forest are not affected by an application for financial aid, which is considered only after enrollment has been approved by the Admissions Committee. The financial aid committee considers applications until funds are exhausted, but parents should submit required forms promptly after they are mailed out, beginning in December.

Parents should contact the financial aid office early in order to meet deadlines for consideration in the initial round of decisions concerning awards. Parents’ Financial Statements (PFS) are due at Woodberry Forest by January 31, and complete financial aid applications by February 25.
  • Q. What plans are available for those who do not qualify for assistance?

    A. Woodberry Forest School offers a 10-month payment plan administered through the Woodberry business office. The plan allows families to make tuition payments on a monthly basis. This plan may cover all or part of the costs at Woodberry Forest School except for the room deposit. The 10-month payment plan must be established by April 30th.
