Woodberry Forest School Remembers the Life of Bobby Moubray

Bobby Moubray, a member of the Woodberry Forest staff for more than fifty years, died Tuesday, November 6.

Bobby joined the athletic department staff in 1961 as equipment manager. He began helping Leonard Dick, the long-time football coach and athletic director, hand-stamp the letters “WFS” onto the athletic gear issued to Woodberry boys for practices. Some time in the 1970s the gear became known as “Moubray wear” after Bobby and his brother, James, who joined the gym staff in 1972.

Though Bobby retired as equipment manager in 1999, he continued to drive Woodberry buses to athletic contests for another fifteen years before fully retiring in 2014. He was intensely proud of the Dick Gym’s appearance, and even in retirement would tidy up the gym if he saw something that needed fixing.

Benny Haggin ' 21 wins HJGT Northern Virginia Junior Open

Fourth former Benny Haggin fired a 74 (+3) in the final round and cruised to a 20-shot victory (77-74 =151) in the Hurricane Junior Golf Tour's Northern Virginia Junior Open 14-15 age division this weekend.

The highlight of Haggin's second round was three consecutive birdies on holes 9-11. "I chipped in [on hole 9]," he said. A perfect drive on hole 10 then left him a short pitch, which he hit to five feet for his second birdie.

But Haggin's play at the par 5, 507-yard 11th showed off his course management. After pulling his tee shot left and having to pitch back into play, Haggin fired his 170-yard approach towards the middle of the green. The ball took the green's contour and rolled toward the back left pin, finishing about 15 feet from the hole.

Haggin added a fourth birdie on the short, par 4 14th before dropping three strokes on the next two holes.

Senior Jack Stein also shot a 74 in his final round for a 156 total and a 7th place finish in the 16-18 age division. Other Woodberry Forest finishers in this division were fifth former Jack Malone (90-80 =170, 16th); fourth former John Tandberg (96-85 =181, 22nd); fifth former Brandt Garrard (97-98 =195, t25th), and fifth former Chris Cecil in (106-106 =212, 27th).

    Yeonmi Park Delivers Fitzpatrick Lecture

North Korean defector and human rights activist Yeonmi Park delivered the forty-fifth annual Fitzpatrick Lecture at Woodberry Forest School on September 13, 2018. Ms. Park escaped from North Korea in 2007, when she was thirteen years old, and gained international prominence as a speaker, human rights activist, and author.

Ms. Park told students that the concept of human rights could not be learned while living in North Korea, where citizens are told what to think and what to do. Words like “rights,” “love,” and even “I” do not exist there, she said. As she shared the story of her defection, she explained that watching an illegal copy of The Titanic and seeing the lights of China in the distance helped her and her family decide to make the risky journey to China.

    Woodberry Opens 130th School Year

Woodberry Forest School welcomed 127 new boys to campus Sunday, August 26 as it began its 130th year.

This year’s student body of 395 boys hails from twenty-three states and the District of Columbia, as well as more than twenty countries around the world.

The senior prefect, selected earlier this month by a vote of his fellow prefects during a retreat in Colorado, is Dylan Walmsley of Charlottesville, Virginia. Dylan, who will serve as a prefect on Turner Hall, is a member of the Cum Laude Society and plays varsity soccer and varsity lacrosse.

In remarks to the student body Monday evening, Dylan called on both old boys and new boys to ensure every Woodberry student feels like a part of the school’s brotherhood. He also urged students to focus on taking advantage of the school’s campus and to prioritize their relationships with fellow students and with faculty ahead of technology or other distractions.

Students attended their first classes on Wednesday, August 29. In the two preceding days the old boys helped orient new students to life at Woodberry. The entire community enjoyed an advisor dinner and chapel, as well as a special scavenger hunt for new boys and evening gatherings for all students with their advisors.

Taylor Tucker of Manakin-Sabot, Virginia will serve as deputy senior prefect and live on Taylor Hall, while Billy Huger of Atlanta, Georgia serves as scribe for the prefect board and will live on B Dorm in the Walker Building.
