CJ Prosise ’12 was drafted by the Seattle Seahawks last month. CJ was selected in the third round as the ninetieth pick. CJ arrived as a new boy third former from Petersburg, Virginia. After graduating from Woodberry Forest School, he went to Notre Dame University, graduating this May.
Clint Alexander, Woodberry’s head football coach, said CJ worked hard each year to improve his academic performance. “Every time you saw CJ, he was always studying and trying to be prepared,” Clint said. “He was always grinding, and now he’s graduating with a degree from Notre Dame.”
On the football field, CJ started his Woodberry career at wide receiver. He then moved to safety and was the team’s punt returner and kickoff returner, earning all state honors as both a defender and a special teams player. His Woodberry career included a 3-0 record against Episcopal in The Game.
“He is incredibly coachable,” Clint said. “He is a great player and a better teammate.”
At Notre Dame, CJ spent his first two years as a wide receiver. He was moved to running back before the 2015 season and rushed for over 1,000 yards while scoring eleven touchdowns. He also caught twenty-eight passes, including one touchdown.
Pete Carroll, coach of the Seattle Seahawks, has compared CJ to Reggie Bush, a running back Carroll coached at the University of Southern California who has spent a decade in the NFL as a runner and pass catcher. Carroll has said he believes CJ could serve as Seattle’s third down running back and work in situations where the Seahawks want to throw the ball to a fast player in the open field.
Along with his successful football career at Woodberry, CJ was a member of the basketball and track teams. He was an All-Prep high jumper and All-State sprinter and long jumper his senior year. During Amici Night he was awarded the Michael M. Reilly MVP Award in Football, as well as the MVP awards for indoor and outdoor track.
CJ Prosise is the third Woodberry graduate to reach the NFL. Kendall (KG) Gaskins ’09 entered the league after a career at the University of Richmond; he is currently with the San Francisco 49ers. Ed Reynolds ’10 played at Stanford University and is now a member of the Philadelphia Eagles.
