A new exhibition of paintings by Rob Deane ’05, FACES (Social Media Portraits in 25 Minutes or Less), will be on display during January and February, 2014, in the Baker Gallery of the Walker Fine Arts Center at Woodberry Forest School.
Rob Deane has been painting profile pictures of his Facebook friends for the last five years. The technique of painting, in which each portrait is completed in one quick session, is based on a painting exercise in which he excelled as an art student. With portraiture on the Internet, one's identity on the web is open to interpretation. This exhibition explores the art of painting as well as the psychology of online presence and projection of the self.
Born and raised in Charlottesville, Virginia, Rob studied art under the guidance Kelly Lonergan and Caroline Cobb at Woodberry Forest School and earned a degree in architecture from Virginia Tech. For the past three years, he has designed for two firms in the Washington, DC, area. He now lives and works in Seattle, Washington.
Two receptions for the artist will be held: Thursday, January 9, 6:50 - 7:30 pm, and Friday, January 10, 5:00 to 8:00 pm. There will be a brief gallery talk at 7:00 pm each evening. The receptions are free and open to the public.
