Historian Addresses Upper Formers

Professor John Fea of Messiah College in Pennsylvania spoke to Woodberry Forest's fifth and sixth formers on September 17, 2012, about his book, Was America Founded As a Christian Nation?: A Historical Introduction. The book was nominated for the George Washington Book prize. Offering more than a discussion of the evidence drawn from his study of two hundred years of US history, Professor Fea also presented basic principles of historical thinking that make simplistic answers impossible. He argued against looking to history to find evidence useful to one's present needs and supported an appreciation of the complexity of historical discovery.
