Nineteen Students Initiated into Cum Laude Society

At an assembly on Monday, April 25, 2011, nine fifth formers and ten sixth formers were awarded pins and certificates by Academic Dean Steve Culbertson and Headmaster  Dennis Campbell to mark their initiation into the Cum Laude Society.

Speaking at the ceremony was  Peter Upham, executive director of The Association of Boarding Schools (TABS). Mr. Upham spoke about the ideals expressed in the Cum Laude Society’s purpose: to praise excellence, justice, and honor. Drawing from his own life experiences, he encouraged students to pursue excellence and to use the “gift of a setback” to improve themselves. “Every success can be traced to a failure,” he noted.

The Cum Laude Society, modeled on Phi Beta Kappa, was established in 1906. The Woodberry Forest chapter elects up to twenty percent of each class, half of them during their fifth-form year. Faculty members who were elected to Phi Beta Kappa in college are also members of the Woodberry Forest Chapter.

A reception at the Residence followed the assembly.
