Woodberry Grappler Takes Down School Records

Duke Pickett ’11 of Culpeper, Virginia, ended a record-shattering Woodberry wrestling career at the National Prep Wrestling Championships on February 24-26, 2011, where he placed fourth in a tough 152-pound weight class. Woodberry Forest’s three qualifying grapplers, Duke, Taylor Reuss ’12, and Brandon Walker ’14, earned enough points to put Woodberry into the top one-fifth of teams at the tournament.

Duke ended his Woodberry career with an overall record of 156 wins and 29 losses. He broke four school records during his time as a Tiger: most wins in a season—he had forty-eight wins this year; most consecutive dual meet wins--his forty-four consecutive wins beat the eight-year-old record of thirty; most career wins; and most career pins--his 100 pins beat the previous record of ninety-five.

Varsity wrestling head coach Colin Gay ’93 remarks, “Duke approaches academics and athletics in the same fashion: he sets a goal and then works to achieve it. His preparation and focus are what set him apart.” Recruited by several top programs, Duke will wrestle at Cornell University.
