Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell has selected Bill Hazel ’74 to be the state’s secretary of health and human resources. Dr. Hazel is a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon and a founding partner of Commonwealth Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation in Herndon, VA.
“Dr. Bill Hazel is not only a successful physician, but also a successful businessman,” said Governor McDonnell in making the announcement. “This is the type of leader and innovator we need in Richmond—someone who not only understands the medical side of the job, but also how to provide much-needed services to the people of Virginia.”
Bill was elected to the American Medical Association Board of Trustees in June 2004 following eleven years of serving the organization as a delegate from Virginia. He is a past president of the Inova Fair Oaks Hospital medical staff and former chair of the Inova Health System Medical Affairs Council. A former assistant orthopaedic surgeon for the Washington Redskins and the D.C. United soccer team, he has volunteered as physician for Chantilly High School.
Bill earned his B.S. in civil engineering from Princeton University and his medical degree from Duke University School of Medicine. He and his wife, Cindy, live in Oakton, VA. They are the parents of two grown children, William and Suzanne.
