-------ORIGINAL STORY -------------------

Who would ever guess that a quiet boys’ boarding school in central Virginia would attract some of the world’s finest youngest physicists for spirited competition?

That’s exactly what will happen at Woodberry Forest School in Madison County, VA, where eight teams of physicists from high schools around the globe will compete February 6 - 7 in the 2009 United States Invitational Young Physicists Tournament (USIYPT).

Teams from Singapore, the Slovak Republic, and Australia, as well as American high schools from New York to California, are expected to travel to the Woodberry campus to participate in the invitation-only event.

The USIYPT is a theoretical and experimental competition that encourages teams to develop their own unique solutions to physics problems and then defend their solutions in friendly, but intense, “physics fights” that are judged by a panel of experts in front of spectators.

The tournament, which is similar to competitions that have been common in former Soviet countries for years, was developed by the United States Association for Young Physicists to encourage physics students to develop research skills, and to encourage high school teachers to develop their own physics ability through research activities.

Woodberry Forest won the USIYPT championship in 2007, and was runner-up in 2008. The College Board has recognized Woodberry for offering one of the strongest Advanced Placement physics programs in Virginia. Woodberry physics teacher Greg Jacobs has been recognized by the Siemens Foundation as the top AP physics teacher in the state.

Woodberry Forest is a highly selective, independent boarding school for boys in grades 9 - 12 from 31 states, the District of Columbia, and eight other countries. Founded in 1889, it emphasizes an education based on intellectual thoroughness, moral integrity, and good sportsmanship.
