Swimming takes fourth in the Prep League

This weekend Woodberry swimming took fourth place at the LIS & Virginia Prep League Swimming and Diving Championship.  Overall, the team swam very well and we were able to get two more swimmers to qualify for the state meet in individual events.  Pearce Mayer had a great meet.  Pearce dropped .81 seconds in the 50 free and 2.55 seconds in the 100 back to make two state cuts.  Jack Joynson also swam very well this weekend.  He lowered his best time in the 200 free by .75 seconds and also improved his 500 free time by 6.19 seconds to make his first state cut.

The two most exciting races of the weekend were the 200 medley relay and the 200 free relay.  Brewer Matthews, George Lane-Roberts, Mark Peyton and Harry Stephens finished second to Collegiate’s team by .18 seconds.  George, Mark and Harry then teamed up with Saang Lee in the 200 free relay.  The relay posted a season best time by about a second, but finished .5 seconds behind the St. Christopher’s squad.

George Lane-Roberts earned our highest individual place this weekend.  George placed 2 in the 100 breast while swimming a personal best time.  George also finished 6th in the 200 individual medley.  Mark Peyton earned the most points for the team this weekend by placing third in both the 50 free and 100 fly.  Brewer Matthews swam a best time in the 100 back while taking 4th place and also finished 6th in the 500 free.  Harry Stephens also had a great meet. Harry swam two fantastic relay legs, finished 6th in the 50 free and dropped 1.21 seconds in the 100 free to take 8th.  Our three divers, Jay Shelly (10th), CB Rice (11th) and David Bethel (13th) did well competing in their first 11 dive competition.

Many other Tigers saw time improvements this weekend as well.  Steven Burris lowed his 100 free time by 1.69 seconds.  Andrew Duverney dropped .53 seconds in the 50 free and 7.57 seconds in the 100 breast.  Daniel Hughes swam very well and improved his 50 back time by .92 second and his 500 free time by 3.81 seconds.  And last, but not least, was Greg West who showed remarkable improvement this season in the 100 fly, and had his best time by .92 seconds.

This year the time standards for the state meet were lowered to improve the quality of the meet.  Woodberry has 12 swimmers and 3 divers who are eligible to compete in individual events this year.  Congratulations to David Bethel, Steven Burris, Gavin Forrest, Jack James, Jack Joynson, George Lane-Roberts, Saang Lee, Brewer Matthews, Pearce Mayer, Will Meese, John Moore, Mark Peyton, CB Rice, Jay Shelly, and Harry Stephens.
