Woodberry Forest Golf Achieves Historic 4-Peat at VISAA State Tournament

The Woodberry Forest golf team captured their fourth consecutive VISAA Division 1 State Championship yesterday at the Williamsburg National-Yorktown course in dramatic fashion. Despite battling intermittent rain showers and unseasonably cold temperatures, the Tigers managed to edge out a determined St. Christopher’s squad by a single stroke, finishing with a team score of 291 to the Saints' 292. This victory not only marks a historic "four-peat" for the program but also extends Woodberry’s record to nine state titles since the tournament’s inception in 2008.

The championship effort was led by Hayes Corcell ’27, who earned medalist honors with a stellar 5-under-par 67. Corcell’s performance makes him the seventh Tiger to lead the state field and only the third player in school history, joining Peter Knade ’14 and Benny Haggin ’21, to sweep both the Prep League and VISAA individual titles in the same season. Senior James Doyle also cemented his legacy, concluding his high school career with a 3-under 69 to earn his fourth All-State honor. Doyle now stands as one of only three players in VISAA history to achieve All-State status in all four years, alongside fellow Woodberry legends Will Brown ’24 and Mack Edwards ’25.

The road to the trophy came down to the final moments on the 18th green. After Henry Cardwell ’26 and Hudson Doyle ’29 both turned in scores of 80, the Tigers found themselves trailing with only two groups left on the course. The momentum shifted when James Gavin ’27, who finished with a 76, drained a crucial birdie putt on the final hole. Minutes later, teammate Walker Shull ’28 carded a 79 after calmly converting a pressure-packed 10-foot par putt to seal the one-stroke win. Through grit and composure in the face of both a fierce rival and difficult elements, the Tigers once again proved their dominance as the premier program in Virginia.
