Varsity Golf Wins Fourth Straight State Championship

Overcoming intermittent rain showers, unseasonably cold temperatures, and a determined opponent, the Woodberry Forest golf team squeaked out a one-stroke victory over St. Christopher’s, 291–292, at the Williamsburg National-Yorktown course. The win marks the Tigers’ fourth consecutive state title, and a record ninth overall since the tournament began in 2008.

Continuing his strong play, Hayes Corcell earned medalist honors with a (-5) 67, becoming the seventh Tiger golfer to do so. Hayes also became the third Woodberry player to win both the Prep League and VISAA individual titles in the same season (Peter Knade, 2014; Benny Haggin, 2021).

James Doyle concluded his career with a fine (-3) 69 and earned his fourth All-State honor. James joins two other Woodberry golfers, Will Brown and Mack Edwards, as the only players in VISAA history to have done so.

As in the past, the final Woodberry players determined the outcome. Henry Cardwell and Hudson Doyle each shot 80, meaning that the Tigers were behind the Saints with two groups remaining. On the 18th hole, James Gavin (76) made a crucial birdie putt, followed a few minutes later by teammate Walker Shull’s (79) converting a 10-foot par putt to seal the victory.
