Match Recap

The Blue Ridge Barons brought a strong and experienced JV wrestling team, and while the results on paper did not fall in our favor, it was a great outing for our first and only match of the season. We will finish off the season with the annual JV Wrestling Invitational on Saturday Feb 7.

Henry Sydnor went 1–1, losing by points to a ranked varsity wrestler in his first match and winning by fall in his second match.

Coming off a few weeks on the IR, Tucker Jones wrestled his first match of the season, and although he didn't win, he took his match the distance and wrestled tough to the end.

Ethan Pogoson kept wrestling after an injury scare but was eventually pinned by his opponent.

Henry Waller wrestled his best match yet even if the result didn't fall in his favor! He took his opponent the distance, reversing him in the final period and just barely ran out of time to pin him.

Timmy Garza pushed the pace in his match and when his opponent was tired, got the turn and a pin for his first win of the season.

Steve Agasino went 0–2 on the day, but showed a lot of promise with his smooth slide by and tough escapes from bottom. Steve was just slightly out of position when he had a chance to pin his opponent in his second match.

Jacob Bursey, wrestling up a weight class, got caught with a sag headlock in the final seconds of the first period. A tough but valuable learning experience for all new wrestlers.

In the heavyweight division, Ford Payne came out hot and pushed the pace against his opponent who had 50 pounds on him, but unfortunately got put to his back while tying up. In his second match, Ford was aggressive but ultimately got taken down and pinned but managed to execute one of the best neck bridges I've seen from a JV wrestler in my time.

Chuck Masi wrestled a strong opponent and wasn't able to fight out of the half nelson before being pinned.

Hugh Mangum wrestled well in his debut but wasn't able to fight off his back. Hugh wasn't back to the corner before he had figured out ways to improve for his next match.

Bill Powell wrestled up and pushed the pace in his match but was just a little late with his sprawl and got taken down and pinned.

The fact that the JV wrestlers have been showing up every day and working hard for 2.5 months without a match speaks volumes to their work ethic and character. They have embraced the grind and it showed up last night as we were clearly the better conditioned team.

Coach Bullock and I could not be more proud to call ourselves coaches of this crew!

Go Tigers!
