College Counseling Boot Camp Returns for a Second Year

Members of Woodberry’s fifth and sixth forms got a jump on college preparation before the opening of school this year at the second-annual college counseling boot camp, held August 21 to August 25.

Fifth formers spent each morning in SAT and ACT preparation classes before taking the SAT or a mock, timed test on Saturday to gauge their improvement over the week. They also had the chance to visit two colleges, choosing between the University of Virginia or the University of Richmond on Tuesday and Georgetown University or George Washington University on Thursday.

Sixth formers focused on preparing their college applications and essays, with the college counseling team teaching short sessions on several topics, including financial aid, Naviance (the online system students, parents, and counselors use to track the college process), and the importance of meeting deadlines. Members of the Woodberry English Department led seminars on effective college essay writing before meeting individually with boys to help them revise and tweak their essays.
