Efose Oriaifo ’17 and Coach Nolan LaVoie Recognized by National Cycling Association

The National Interscholastic Cycling Association (NICA) has included Woodberry Forest mountain biking coach Nolan LaVoie and student-athlete Efose Oriaifo among those receiving awards for the 2016 season. The pair, who rode together during the fall on a tandem bicycle so that Efose could participate despite a visual impairment, were honored with the GU Energy Extraordinary Courage Award.
Peter Hufnagel and Andrea Dvorak, founders of Virginia's interscholastic cycling league, presented the award to Efose and Nolan at Woodberry's Awards Ceremony on May 22, 2017.

NICA’s President Austin McInerny observed, “With over 425 nominations submitted this year, the selection process was extremely challenging. This year’s award recipients are exemplary in so many ways and NICA is thankful for their involvement and contributions. While each recipient is unique in their various accomplishments and roles within the NICA community, they all share a strong belief in our core values of inclusivity, fairness, equality and a desire to strengthen body, mind, and character through cycling. Congratulations to this year’s NICA Award recipients!”
