Spanish Students Write and Present Poetry

The Honors Spanish IV students of Raphael Sydnor ’97 concluded a trimester of work on February 23, 2017, when they presented their original poetry to an audience of peers along with guests from Foxcroft School.  The event, called Versos Sensillos II, was preceded by a dinner featuring Latin American menu items in Terry Dining Hall.  The poetry reading was held in the Bomb Shelter Experimental Theater and was followed by a reception in the Baker Gallery.

The nine students took inspiration from Hispanic poets of the old and new worlds. Their poems often used nature imagery to express abstract ideas about happiness, childhood, or love.  “Like a tree, tonight you enjoy the fruit,” said Raphael.  “But do not forget the tree’s unseen struggle and strength, rooted in the richest poetic past possible, that has led us to this moment.”

This was the second annual program in the series, which was dedicated to last year’s students, many of whom were in the audience.
