Benny Haggin ' 21 wins HJGT Northern Virginia Junior Open

Fourth former Benny Haggin fired a 74 (+3) in the final round and cruised to a 20-shot victory (77-74 =151) in the Hurricane Junior Golf Tour's Northern Virginia Junior Open 14-15 age division this weekend.

The highlight of Haggin's second round was three consecutive birdies on holes 9-11. "I chipped in [on hole 9]," he said. A perfect drive on hole 10 then left him a short pitch, which he hit to five feet for his second birdie.

But Haggin's play at the par 5, 507-yard 11th showed off his course management. After pulling his tee shot left and having to pitch back into play, Haggin fired his 170-yard approach towards the middle of the green. The ball took the green's contour and rolled toward the back left pin, finishing about 15 feet from the hole.

Haggin added a fourth birdie on the short, par 4 14th before dropping three strokes on the next two holes.

Senior Jack Stein also shot a 74 in his final round for a 156 total and a 7th place finish in the 16-18 age division. Other Woodberry Forest finishers in this division were fifth former Jack Malone (90-80 =170, 16th); fourth former John Tandberg (96-85 =181, 22nd); fifth former Brandt Garrard (97-98 =195, t25th), and fifth former Chris Cecil in (106-106 =212, 27th).
