St. Alban's Wrestling Tournament Results

  • The varisty wrestling team traveled to Washington DC this past weekend and wreslted in one of the premiere tournaments on the East Coast, the St Alban's Tournament.  It is comprised of 32 different teams with participants hailing from Pennsylvania, Delware, Maryland, Virginia, and New Jersey.  It features some of the best wrestling in the country at this time of year at the high school level and many of the competitors are the some of the best in their weight class in the country.
  • With this being the format the Woodberry Forest Tigers took seven wrestlers, out of 14 total weight classes, to the tournament.  The Tigers had a extremely impressive 10th place out of the 32 teams that competed at St Albans and there were 4 wrestlers who placed in the top 8.
  • Shane Maryk was seeded 7th overall but wrestled above his seed and finished up in the top 6 in 6th place, posting a 3-2 recored, and defeated his opponents that were from FUMA, The Potomac School, and Kiski.  Shane was able to beat an opponent from FUMA that he had lost earlier in the season-it was a great two day tournament for Shane.
  • Jared Engh had a fantastic weekend, and although he lost in St Alban's final by a close score and even closer call made by an official, he ended up earning his 171st win for his high school career and took home the 2nd place medal.  Jared was in the finals against a two-time All American from Good Counsel and beat his opponents from The Potomac School, John Paul the Great, St John's College High School that lead up to the finals' match.
  • Cole Martini faced a very tough bracket at 220, and wrestled some very challenging matches and placed 4th in his weight class.  Cole finished up going 4-2 for the tournament while beating his opponents from Kiski, Model School, FUMA, and Bishop McNamara.  Cole has steadily risen up the state rankings over the last two weeks and is competing at a very high level right now.
  • Darby Henagan competed in one of the most difficult weight classes in the entire tournament.  Heavyweight featured some of the best competitors from around the country and still Darby was able to push through some tough situations and take home the 6th place medal-a phenomenal accomplishment for his first time traveling and competing  at St Alban's.
  • Here are how the rest of the Tigers did this past weekend:
  • Will Medick: 2-2
  • Andrew Holmes: 2-2
  • Roy Toston: 0-2
  • All of the Tigers did a great job over the weekend and I am extremely proud of their individual accomplishments as well as their final team standing.  The team competes in the VISAA State Tournament in Richmond on Friday and Saturday this weekend.  Please congratulate the students when you see them on campus and wish them good luck on this weekend.
