Come From Behind Win on the Road for Bengals

The Bengals had an exciting come from behind road win against Pope John Paul the Great Catholic High School Friday afternoon.  After grabbing an early lead on two free throws by Marshall Deal and a nice backdoor layup by Wallace Branche, Pope John Paul started shooting the ball well from outside and took a 10 - 8 lead midway through the opening period.  The Tigers had plenty of scoring opportunities the rest of the quarter, but simply could not finish around the basket.  Pope John Paul continued to score easily and built their lead to 20 - 13 by the end of the quarter.

The Tigers began the second quarter well and made it a one point game, 21- 22, three minutes into the period and eventually retook the lead 23 - 22 with 4:35 remaining in the half.  But Pope John Paul responded with 6 unanswered points to reclaim the lead 28 - 23.  Woodberry once again cut into the lead and trailed 30 - 32 with a minute remaining, but again Pope John Paul had an answer and took a 36 - 31 lead into halftime.

Three minutes into the second half, the Tigers faced their largest deficit, 35 - 46.  Coach Moran tried different lineups to make things happen, and it all turned around when Vas Gnanadoss came off the bench.  Vas immediately hit a three pointer to make it an 8 point game, but more importantly, he turned up the defensive pressure on Pope John Paul's hot shooter.  Marshall, who ended the game with 26 points, went on to score 11 points in the quarter.  Snow Holding aided the come back when he held his ground and took a hard charge in the lane.  By the end of the third quarter, Woodberry was only down four, 47 - 51.

The Bengals kept the momentum going in the fourth quarter and quickly tied the game at 51 - 51 with 7:15 left on the clock.  Pope John Paul got a basket for a 2 point lead, but Vas nailed another 3 pointer to give Woodberry a 54 - 53 edge.  With 2:55 remaining, Wallace grabbed an offense rebound and laid it back in for a 60 - 55 lead.    Wallace then scored on an inbounds play to make it 62 - 55.  Pope John Paul made a free throw to make it 62 - 56 with 1:15 left, but Shep Hardison went 3 for 4 from the line to give Woodberry a 65 - 56 lead with only 30 seconds remaining.  Wallace added a free throw with 17 seconds left and fittingly, Vas put the icing on the cake by making 2 free throws with 5 seconds left on the clock to seal the 68 - 56 victory.

Wallace scored 7 of his 12 points in the fourth quarter and dominated the boards.  By the end of the game, Wallace had pulled down 7 offensive and 8 defensive rebounds.  Shep played a great game and scored 5 of his 8 points in the final period.  Shep ran the offense well and did a good job breaking down Pope John Paul's press.  Shep also dished out a season high 7 assists on the day.  Additionally, Drew Meeks scored 5 points while David Little, Teddy Szyperski and Edwin Borden all had 3 points.

The Bengals are now 9 - 4 and play their final game of the season at home against Sidwell Friends on Tuesday at 4:30 pm.
