The Bengal basketball team got back in the win column Tuesday afternoon with a convincing 69 - 45 victory over visiting Courtland High School. After winning the opening tip, the Tigers did not get off to a good start as they turned the ball over on each of their first three possessions, but were fortunate to only be down 0 - 2. On their fourth trip down the court, David Little found Marshall Deal for 2 of his 7 points and Woodberry's first basket of the day. Marshall then got the ball down low to Drew Meeks and the Tigers grabbed a 4 - 2 lead three and a half minutes into the game. The game was knotted at 6 apiece with 3:30 remaining in the opening quarter before the Bengals went on an 8 - 2 run. Edwin Borden found David open for a 3 pointer with just 3 seconds left to make the score 14 - 8.
The second quarter belonged to the Tigers. Drew Meeks scored 10 of his team high 18 points and Wallace Branche netted 8 of his 12 points during the quarter. The Bengals moved the ball around well and were able to score often by breaking Courtland's press. The team had 6 assists in the period including 2 by Wallace, 2 by Shep Hardison and one by David. Maybe the nicest assist of the quarter was by Vas Gnanadoss who made a steal at half court, drove into the lane and made a great pass to Drew for an easy score. After scoring 27 points in the quarter, the Bengals had a comfortable 41 - 21 lead at halftime.
The Tigers continued to play well at both ends of the court in the second half. Shep scored 6 of his 11 points in the half and picked up a charge on the defensive end. Spencer Taylor scored all 6 of his points in the half and had 2 assists as well. Midway through the third quarter, Spencer ripped the ball away from a Courtland player for a steal, drove down the court, and then fed Shep off a nice bounce pass in the lane for a layup. Edwin Borden, who hustled all game, went 3 for 4 from the line in the half and ended with 5 points. Wallace dominated the boards the entire game and finished with 6 offensive and 8 defensive rebounds. During the fourth, Snow Holding and Brandon Gilbert took over the rebounding duties. Snow would pulled down 5 boards while playing tough underneath and Brandon collected 3 rebounds. 10 of the Tiger's 14 points in the fourth quarter came from the free throw line. Jack Fleming, Teddy Szyperski, Brandon, Snow and Edwin each went 1 for 2 from the line. David finished with 6 points for the game after making 3 free throws after being fouled on a 3 point shot attempt.
By the end of the game, the Bengals shot 65% from the line, grabbed 38 rebounds, had 15 assists and 10 steals. All 13 players contributed to the victory as they executed the offense well and played solid defense. The Bengals are now 8 - 4 on the season with just two game remaining. Next up is an away game against Pope John Paul the Great Catholic High School on Friday at 4:30 pm.
