Bengal Basketball Drop One to Collegiate

The Bengal basketball team traveled to Richmond looking to avenged a loss to the Cougars earlier this season.  Unfortunately for the Tigers, they did not shoot the ball well and were held to a season low 18 rebounds.  Drew Meeks scored the first basket of the game for 2 of his team high 10 points, but that would prove to be Woodberry's only lead of the game.  Collegiate responded with a 3 pointer on their next possession and followed with a 2 pointer to take a 5 - 2 lead.  Wallace Branched drove to the hoop and scored while being fouled, but the score remained 4 - 5 after a missed free throw.  Wallace would end the day with 5 points and 3 rebounds.  Teddy Szyperski came off the bench to grab 2 rebounds and go 1 for 2 from the line.  At the end of the first quarter, the Bengals trailed 5 - 9.

Woodberry benefitted from Collegiate getting into foul trouble early in the second quarter.  The Tigers went to the line 14 times in the quarter and converted 11 times.  Edwin Borden went 3 for 4 from the line and added a bucket to score all five of his points in the period.  Marshall Deal went 4 for 4 from the line while scoring 4 of his 6 points on the day and Spencer Taylor was 2 for 2 from the line as he netted 2 of his 5 points on the day.  At halftime, the Cougars had built their lead to 27 - 20.

The Bengals continued to struggle offensively during the third quarter.  Spencer, Drew and Wallace each made a basket and David Little added 2 free throws.  After facing a 12 point deficit with 1:30 remaining in the quarter, Woodberry scored 4 straight points but trailed 28 - 36 after three periods.  Midway through the final quarter, the Bengals trailed 32 - 42, but were able to close the gap to 5 points with 2:45 remaining in the game.  This was a close as the Bengals would get though.  David Little scored 7 of his 9 points in the quarter, but Collegiate hit their free throws down the stretch and took a 50 - 41 victory.

The Bengals are now 7- 3 on the season and travel to play a tough Flint Hill squad on Saturday.
