The Bengal basketball squad improved their record to 7 - 2 with a road win over Covenant School on Saturday. The Tigers had difficulty finding their range in the early minutes against Covenant's zone, and the Eagles held a 3 - 0 lead 2 and a half minutes into the contest. Wallace Branche got Woodberry on the scoreboard by hitting one of two free throws and then tied the game at 3 - 3 with a bucket down low. After missing his first few attempts, Marshall Deal found his rhythm and drained 2 three pointers as the Tigers built an 11 - 5 first quarter lead.
During the second quarter, Woodberry's offense looked good and created many scoring opportunities. The Tigers dominated the boards and were able to pull down six offensive rebounds during the second period. Unfortunately they were unable to finish the put-backs and also struggled from the free throw line. Eight missed free throws in the period allowed the Eagles to remain close. Edwin Borden scored 6 of his team high 13 points in the period and Marshall added 4 of his 12 points as Woodberry settled for a 23 - 16 halftime lead.
Great defense set the tone for the second half. The Bengals contested almost every shot and continued to control the boards. Drew Meeks had 3 of his 4 rebounds in the third quarter and also scored 2 points. Snow Holding, who was in foul trouble early, defended the paint well and did not allow any easy shots. Spencer Taylor had 1 of his 4 steals on the day during the quarter and also scored 2 points. Wallace scored 2 of his 9 points and grabbed 2 of his 9 rebounds in the period as well. By outscoring the Eagles 11 - 3, the Bengals built a comfortable 34 - 19 lead.
In the fourth quarter, Woodberry tried to be patient and look for good options offensively. Shep Hardison scored on a nice drive to the hoop for his 2 points on the day. Shep also had 4 assists and a steal. Jack Fleming came off the bench to score 2 points by converting a couple of free throws. The Bengals were able to beat Covenant's press and take time off the clock and ultimately won by a score of 42 - 29.
The Bengals are back on the road Tuesday when they travel to Blue ridge School for a 4:00 pm game.
