The Bengals were able to improve their overall season record to 5 - 1 by defeating Trinity Episcopal School for the second time in five days by a score of 62 - 46. Shep Hardison immediately got the Tigers on the board as he took the opening tip from Wallace Branche straight in for a layup. One of the goals for today was to shoot well from the free throw line and starter Teddy Szyperski got the team off to a good start as he went 2 for 2 from the line to net two of his 8 points on the day. Marshall Deal was also on the floor to begin the game and scored 4 of his 7 points during the first quarter. Vas Gnanadoss rounded off the starting five. Edwin Borden came off the bench to collect 4 of his 6 points in the opening period. Snow Holding entered the game and had two nice assists and 2 of his 4 points in the first quarter as well as Woodberry built a 20 - 8 lead.
Another team goal for today's game was to be tough under the boards at both ends of the floor. The Tigers limited the Titans to only a few offensive rebounds while grabbing 12 offensive rebounds of their own. Wallace, who had a game high 14 rebounds, had 4 offensive rebounds himself. Wallace also went 3 for 4 from the line to earn his 3 points. Teddy grabbed 2 offensive boards, while Vas, Marshall, Spencer Taylor, David Little, Brandon Gilbert and Snow each had 1.
Although the Bengals controlled the first half and went into the break with a 32 - 14 lead, the Titans continued to battle during the second half. Trinity's Joey Evans scored a game high 20 points and led his team while cutting the lead to 12, but that was as close as the Titans would come in the second half. Balanced scoring kept the Tiger's offense rolling. 11 of 13 players scored today. Both Shep, 9 points, and David, 7 points, were able to score during each quarter. Spencer hit a bucket early for his 2 points while Drew Meeks scored his 4 points during the second half.
Trinity tried to get back in the game by sending the Tigers to the free throw line, but Brandon Wilson and Vas sealed the game by making their free throws. Vas went 2 for 2 from the line in the fourth quarter for his 2 points on the day. Brandon came up big down the stretch as he scored all of his team high 10 points in the final period while going 8 for 10 from the line.
The Bengals will look to improve their record on Saturday as they host Pope John Paul the Great Catholic HS at 1:30 pm.
