Bengal Basketball Defeats Blue Ridge

The Bengal basketball team played well Saturday at home and cruised to a 65 – 21 victory over Blue Ridge.  Today’s starters were Shep Hardison, Marshall Deal, Edwin Borden, Snow Holding and Wallace Branche.  Marshall got things started quickly as he drove to the basket and scored 2 of his 4 points just 15 seconds into the game.  About midway through the first period, the Bengals had built an 11 – 0 lead before Blue Ridge got on the board with a couple of free throws.  Shep had an excellent first quarter as he scored all 8 points.  Three times Shep stole the ball and drove in for uncontested layups.  David Little hit a 3 pointer off a nice assist from Vas Gnanadoss for his only basket on the day.  Snow also scored all his points in the first period as he got a basket in the paint and went 2 for 2 from the line.  Snow also had 6 boards and 2 steals.  At the end of the first quarter, Woodberry led 23 – 8.

In the second quarter Wallace took over on the boards.  Wallace pulled down 2 offensive and 2 defensive rebounds while he scored all 6 of his points.  David returned the favor to Vas with an assist as Vas hit a 2 pointer off an inbounds play.  Vas would add two 3 pointers later in the game to finish with 8 points in addition to his 4 assists.  Brandon Gilbert, who had 5 rebounds, grabbed an offensive rebound and scored for his 2 points.  By halftime the Bengals had stretched their lead to 37 – 14.

Drew Meeks, who also finished with 8 points, got the second half started with 3 quick baskets.  Teddy Szyperski fought hard for 6 rebounds today.  Teddy was able to rebound his own missed shot and score in the third period and ended the game with 6 points.  Taylor Spencer, who played a solid game today with 2 offensive rebounds and 3 assists, scored a nice layup off a pass from David on a fast break. At the end of the third quarter, the score was 54 – 17.

Crowd favorite Jack Fleming played a scrappy game and scored 4 of his 6 points in the final period.  One of his baskets came off a beautiful bounce pass from Brandon Gilbert in the lane.  Jack also hustled for team high 7 rebounds.  Brandon Wilson scored 4 of his 8 points in the fourth quarter.  In addition, Brandon had 3 rebounds and an assist in the game.  In the end, the Tigers had dominated the glass with 41 rebounds and played unselfishly while having 16 assists and only 6 turnovers.

The Bengals are off until after the break and resume play when they travel to Trinity Episcopal School on January 9th.
