Bengal Basketball Defeats Pope John Paul

It may have been bitter cold outside, but Marshall Deal was red hot from behind the 3 point line and his game high 24 points helped the Bengals defeat Pope John Paul the Great Catholic High School by a score of 60 - 45.  The Tigers got off to a nice start by making good passes while running their basic offense.  Edwin Borden got things going with a bucket down low off an assist from Marshal for 2 of his 5 points.  On the next possession, Drew Meeks pulled down an offensive rebound and was fouled.  After Drew made both free throws, Woodberry led 4 - 1.  Drew would grab 6 of his 9 rebounds, and score 6 of his 9 points, in the first period, but the Tigers could not pull away from Pope John Paul early.  With 4 points from Shep and 5 from Marshall, the Bengals scored 17 in the opening period, but only led by 3.

The Tigers opened up their lead in the second quarter.  Shep, who had 6 points on the day scored the first points off a baseline jumper.  Marshall then got a steal at the other end, passed the ball up to Shep, who fed the ball back to Marshall for a 3 pointer.  Spencer Taylor came off the bench to score 2 of his 4 points, and Marshall hit another 3 pointer during the quarter and the lead was 10.  The Bengals ended the half with a 4 point run as Shep twice passed the ball up the court to Marshall for layups.  At the half, Woodberry led 35 -22.

Marshal opened up the third quarter with a 2 point basket, but Pope John Paul responded quickly with 6 straight points to make the score 37 - 28.  3 pointers from Marshall and David Little, and baskets from Drew and Spencer allowed the Bengals to push the lead back to eleven with the score 47 -36 after three quarters.  Marshall hit his fifth 3 pointer of the day to open the final quarter.  Snow Holding made a great ball fake and stepped in to hit a 6 foot jump shot for his 2 points, and what proved to be Woodberry's final basket from the floor.  Once again the Bengals were tested at the free throw line in order to hold the lead.  Edwin, Vas Gnanadoss and Brandon Gilbert each went 1 for 2 from the line.  Jack Flemming made 2 of 4 and Brandon Wilson made 3 of 4 to seal the victory.

The Bengals played hard today to beat a good team.  Wallace Branch played tough under the boards and came up with 6 rebounds.  Edwin hustled to save a ball to keep a possession alive and Snow ran hard down the court to get a steal and break up a fast break opportunity for Pope John Paul.   The Bengal's record is now 6 - 1 on the season and will face a tough Collegiate squad at home on Tuesday.
