Bengal Basketball Beats EHS

A day after earning their first road win, the Bengal basketball team took care of business at home against Episcopal High School.  Shep Hardison, Marshall Deal, David Little, Drew Meeks and Wallace Branche took the floor to start the game today for the Tigers.  EHS got off to a solid start as they led early 2-0 then 4-2.  Good free throw shooting allowed the Bengals to take the lead 7 – 4 about midway through the opening period.  They extended their lead to 9 – 4 when Drew pulled down one of his six rebounds, got the ball to Shep who then passed the ball down court to Marshall for a layup.  Later in the period, Drew got a bucket for his 2 points on the day and the first quarter ended with Woodberry having an 11 – 4 lead.

The Bengals took control of the game during the first 2 minutes of the second quarter.  Marshall, who finished with a game high 14 points, hit a 3 pointer to open the period.  The Tigers went into a full court press and got EHS to turn the ball over.  Off the turnover Vas Gnandoss hit a three pointer.  After a defensive stop, Spencer Taylor drained a 3 pointer and the lead quickly had ballooned to 20 – 4.  Spencer, who finished the game with 10 points, continued to shoot the ball well in the quarter as he netted 5 more points.  Wallace scored after grabbing 1 of his 5 rebounds on the day and Woodberry was able to take a 29 – 9 lead into halftime.

The two teams played pretty evenly during the second half, but EHS was never able to get back into the game.  Brandon Wilson scored all 7 of his points during the second half to help keep the Bengals ahead by a comfortable margin.  David hit a 3 pointer in the third quarter and finished the day with 6 points, 2 steals and 4 assists.  Shep was able to steal the ball from the EHS point guard and drive in for 2 of his 4 points.  Shep also had 3 assists and 4 steals.  Teddy Szyperski scored 2 of his 3 points in the fourth quarter and Brandon Gilbert scored a hoop as well as Woodberry went on to win 53 – 16.  Snow Holding played a good game as he blocked, or altered, a  number of EHS shots down low.

The Bengals now have a record of 4 – 1, and return to the court Tuesday January 13th, when they host Trinity Episcopal School at 4:30 pm.
