The Bengal basketball team opened up their season today with an exciting 49-47 win over visiting Eastern Mennonite High School. The Dick Gymnasium was rocking as many students came out to support their classmates. The game was played at a high tempo, and at times got a bit chaotic, but Coach Moran was able to settle the team down the stretch and guide the squad to their first victory. Marshall Deal, David Little, Edwin Borden, Drew Meeks and Wallace Branch started the game for the Tigers. David ran the offense as point guard and hit a 3 pointer midway through the first period. Marshal scored 7 of his team high 19 points and Drew added 4 of his 11 points in the first quarter to allow the Bengals to finish the period with a 16 - 12 lead. During the second quarter Wallace, who finished with 3 points and 3 rebounds, ignited the crowd with one of his two blocked shots on the day. The Tigers struggled to score in the second quarter and fell behind 22 - 25 going into half time.
Woodberry battled back in the third quarter. Marshall hit back to back threes to give the Tigers a 33 - 29 lead 3 minutes into the half. Drew did a nice job on the boards as he collected 3 of his team high 8 rebounds during the period. Both teams played hard and at the end of 3 quarters the score was tied at 35 all.
In the fourth quarter, Woodberry jumped out to a quick 4 point lead after Drew made a basket then Edwin Borden, who finished with 5 points, made a nice steal which led to a layup. The rest of the scoring for the Bengals came from the free throw line. Spencer Taylor and Shep Hardison both had a good fourth quarters and each went 3 for 4 from the line. Spencer also finished the game with three rebounds while Shep had a steal, an assist and a rebound. Teddy Szyperski picked up a couple rebounds and also went 1 for 2 from the line in the final quarter. The Tigers were leading 46 - 41 but after 3 quick turnovers, they found themselves trailing 46 - 47 with 3 minutes remaining. Marshall made two clutch free throws to give Woodberry a 48 - 47 lead with 2:30 left. Good defense during the final minutes did not give the Flames any easy looks at the basket. With 35 seconds left, Snow Holding, who finished with 5 rebounds, pulled down a big board. After an empty trip at the offensive end, David hustled to pick up a loose ball and Woodberry called timeout with 8 seconds left. Shep was fouled on the inbounds play and his free throw made the score 49 - 47 with 6.5 seconds left. Eastern Mennonite got off a good shot at the buzzer which hit the rim, but Woodberry prevailed.
The Bengals travel to Richmond on Tuesday to play St. Christopher's School at 4:00.
