The Tigers played a difficult track Thursday, Royal New Kent GC, which proved a tough test. Although the tournament was scheduled for 27 holes, the coaches decided that 6 1/2 hours to play 18 holes was enough golf for everybody.
When play was halted, the low four scores were used to determine the team champion. Woodberry and St. Christopher's were tied with identical scores of 310. (To put the RNK GC course in perspective, our average score this year is 298). According to the tie-breaker rules, the fifth lowest players' scores were used. Both Woodberry's and St. Christopher's players shot the same score. So the sixth and final players' scores were used, and here the Saints edged out the Tigers to claim the championship.
Junior Johnny Kyger fired a one-over par 73 to win the individual championship by two strokes. Johnny becomes the 18th Tiger to win the Prep League crown, earning All-Prep honors along with classmates Jim Frazier and Chamberlain Hill, as well as fourth former Thomas Walter. St. Christopher's was next with three All-Prep golfers.
