What a crazy day for our three healthy juniors-- 5 hours of SAT multiple choice, race to get a quick lunch, jump on a bus for 2 hours, and then play a tennis match in the middle of a festive field day event at Landon. Luckily for us we had the young guns ready to carry the load as Sam Funkhouser continued his healing process and Daniel Holst couldn't pass up a pit row seat at the Richmond Nascar race. We played our only 4-3 format match of the year and so all 10 members of the team were on the court at the same time. It was an exciting glimpse of the future as our top three players in singles were Phillip Taylor, Rob Galloway, and Billy Hereford. The rest of our lineup included Tim Perry at number 4 singles, Tom Ellington and Sam Mikell at one doubles, Rags Coxe and Rob Fauntleroy at 2 doubles, and Peter Wilson and H.K. Hallett at 3 doubles.
The tone was set early as Rob G. and Billy completely dominated their matches to give us an early 2-0 lead. Phillip won the first set and then relaxed a little in the second set to make things interesting. After a brief visit from Mr. Boggs he finished the job 6-3, 6-3. So Landon was in need of winning every other match left on the court to win 4-3. Their number 3 team won a close second set to give them their first point. Tom and Sam lost the first set as did Tim at number 4 singles. All of a sudden it was getting a little too close for comfort. Rags and Rob were down 4-3 in the second set after winning the first set so it looked like we could go to the third set there. To their credit, they rallied to go up 5-4. Landon wax in deep trouble as Faunt served for the match. Rags took charge at the net and we held serve for the match to clinch the team victory.
Meanwhile Tom and Sam came back to win the second set and provide plenty of high drama in a 3rd set tiebreaker. After being down 6-3 in the tiebreaker the seasoned veterans rallied for a 8-6 conquest. Tim was also making yet another comeback in the second set to force a 3rd set tiebreaker. He ran out of gas and came up a little short in a stellar effort after the Sat mind blowing morning. So the final tally was 5-2 Tigers with 4 victories provided by first year members of the varsity team.
We finished the regular season with a very respectable 14-4 record. On Tuesday we begin the quest for the 2008 prep league tennis championship. It should be a dogfight between St. Chris, Collegiate, and Woodberry. We hope to play our best tennis of the year in Richmond. It has been a blast for everyone involved irregardless of what happens at the prep league tournament.
