On a beautiful spring afternoon Woodberry played high quality tennis to beat a solid team from Williamsburg. The fact that this was our 18th match of the season helped all of our singles players as they played smart tennis by moving their opponents up and back and waiting for opportunities to be aggressive. Billy Hereford came to play at number 4 and was the first player to finish with a 6-1. 6-1 victory. Daniel Holst followed soon thereafter with a 6-2, 6-2 win at number 2. Rob Galloway had another overpowering win at three singles as he prevailed 6-1, 6-1. The next victorious Tiger was Tim Perry at number 6 as he pulled out a close second set to win 6-1, 6-4. Tommy Ellington made the things interesting at number 5 as his opponent fought to close the gap to 5-4 in the second set. Once Tom found out he could clinch the team match with a 5th win he quickly closed out the second set 6-4. Phillip Taylor had a marathon match at number one that eventually ended up in a 3rd set tie breaker. His opponent made some nice shots in the clutch and found a way to prevail 10-8 in the tie breaker. Rob Fauntleroy and Rags Coxe both played well in winning straight set victories at number 7 and 8 singles.
In doubles the Fauntleroy cousins tangled at the number one spot and Daniel and Rob F. lost a close one 9-8 in a tiebreaker. Billy and Rob G. brought plenty of suspense to number 2 doubles before prevailing 10-6. Peter Wilson had the big first serve rolling early which set the tone for a convincing 10-2 win at three doubles with Sam Mikell. H. K. Hallett and Rags Coxe won easily at the 4th doubles with a 10-5 victory. We head tomorrow for our last regular season match against Landon. It was great to see our seniors finish in style with an impressive 7-2 win over the AA state public school runnerup team. Thanks to the diehards that sacrificed baseball and lax to watch our last home match of the 2008 season.
