Varsity Tennis match suspended due to lightning, rain

On Saturday the Woodberry tennis team had one of its most inspired efforts of the year against a strong Episcopal High School team. Phillip Taylor did a superb job of filling in for Sam Funkhouser at number 1 with a 6-4, 6-1 victory. Daniel Holst ran into a strong tournament player at number 2 and came up a little short. The first Woodberry player off the court was Rob Galloway at number 3 . He did a wonderful job of totally frustrating a quality opponent with a 6-3, 6-1 win. The other three matches on the court were high drama tossups. Tim Perry lost the first set at number 6, but then rallied to win the second set 6-1. It looked like he could pull it out when he took a 4-3 lead in the third set. Unfortunately the Episcopal player kicked it into another gear and won 6-4. So the team score was 2 all. Tom Ellington had a very close match with a personal friend from Charleston. This is what makes Woodberry- Episcopal rivalries so special. Tom won a long first set 8-4, but then trailed most of the second set as the very determined Episcopal player fought for home town rights. Tom served for the match at 5-4, but could not deliver the knockout blow. The next thing he knew he was down 6-5 and fighting to get to a tiebreaker. To his credit he became more aggressive and forced the tiebreaker. In the tiebreaker it was Tom taking charge with a 6-3 lead and an eventual 7-5 victory. That left  "Gramps" Hereford as the last man standing in a 3 hour thriller. Billy won the first set 6-4, but lost the second set 6-3. After a pep talk from Captain Tom Ellington he moved to a 4-3 advantage in the third set. Unfortunately the match had to be suspended at 4 all in the third set due to thunder, lightning, and eventual rain. Rob Fauntleroy also had an impressive victory at number 7 as he continued to show one of the most improved tennis games on the team.
We hope to finish the EHS match sometime this week, but both teams have a busy schedule with 3 matches planned. Thanks a ton for all the support from the dance weekend crowd.
