Despite injuries, Varsity Tennis Wins 9-0

In a match that took three and half hours to complete, the final score was very deceptive. Woodberry had some new faces in the lineup due to injuries. Rob Galloway moved up to number 3 and won 6-1, 6-2. Tim Perry was the second player off the court with a convincing 6-0,6-1 victory at number 6. Tom Ellington returned to the singles lineup at number 4 and had a 6-1, 6-1 win. The other three matches lasted at least two hours and in some cases two and half hours. Rags Coxe made his varsity singles debut at number five and was on the short end of a 6-1 score in the first set. To his credit he became more aggressive and rallied to win the next two sets 6-3, 6-2. At number one singles Daniel Holst filled in for Sam Funkhouser and won the first set. The second set went to a tiebreaker and Daniel lost it 7-5. The Stab player was up 5-4 in the third set and had four different chances to win the match. Holsty fought back to go up 6-5 and used an ingenuous chip and charge return of serve approach to win the match 7-5. The last man standing was Billy Hereford at number 2. Billy split sets after losing the second set tiebreaker 10-8. He regrouped and had an outstanding service game at 5-4 in the third set to win 6-4. The singles score could have easily been 3-3 after singles, but on this day our crew found a way to pull out the close ones.

In doubles Rob G. and Daniel had a convincing 8-2 win at number 1. Tommy E. and Billy came out of the gates a little slow, but rallied for a 8-3 victory at two doubles. At number three Sammy Mikell and Rags won easily 8-2. Peter Wilson and H. K. Hallett had a 8-4 victory at number 4 doubles. it was almost too dark to play when the last doubles match concluded.
