In one of the toughest matches of the year Woodberry notched its 10th win with a 6-3 victory over previously undefeated Douglas Freeman. The singles started out the right way as Billy Hereford continued his outstanding effort at number 4 singles with a 10-1 victory. Phillip Taylor soon followed with an impressive effort at number 3 singles with a 10-2 win. The plot thickened after that as the other 4 matches turned out to be tossups. Rob Galloway jumped out to an early lead and then starting worrying too much about the Tar Heels and Bosox games and we ended up with a tight one at number 4. He found a third wind to survive 10-7. So far so good Woodberry 3 Freeman 0. Sam Funkhouser had another nailbiter at number 1 and unfortunately lost 10-8. Sam Mikell fought hard to get to 10 all tiebreaker only to come up on the short end of 8-6 tiebreaker. Daniel Holst pulled out the victory stoggie too early at number 3 singles and the momentum had clearly swung towards Freeman as he lost 11-9. Woodberry 3 Freeman 3.
Holly smolly we got a barnburner and here come the doubles. We take great pride in our doubles and were cautiously optimistic as we sent 6 doubles teams out to finish the day. Phillip and Rob set the tone with a convincing 10-2 win at number 2 doubles. We needed one more win for the team victory. Both other matches were 5-4 and up for the grabs. Sam and Daniiel kicked it into another gear and went up 9-5 just as Tommy E. and Sam Mikell were bringing home the bacon at 3 doubles on the other stadium court. All of sudden the Freeman fans were headed for the bathroom. So it was just a matter of who would clinch. It was only fitting that our top 2 singles players who had both lost heartbreaker singles matches come through with the 10-5 win at number 1 doubles. Tommy E. and Sam soon followed with another 10-5 victory.
We also had a complete sweep of the 6 doubles matches as Billy H. and Rob Fauntleroy worked their magic to the tune of 10-2, Rags and H.K. somehow beat the famous lefty Lemuel Doss and his partner 10-2, and Tim and Kelvin combined for a 10-3 win. Final score Woodberry 6 Douglas Freeman 3. A wonderful way to finish invite back weekend. Thanks for all the support from parents and students especially Julie and Laurie. We could not have done without the cookies.
