Varsity Tennis wins again!

On Saturday morning the varsity tennis team awoke to the realization that we had our first prep league match and the weather was going to be windy and in the 40's as compared to 80 degrees plus on Friday. Early signs did not look particularly promising as two of our players had failed to follow my advice to bring warm clothes for extreme weather conditions. We started with singles matches and looked strong early as we won 5 out of the 6 first sets. This led to the first three decisions going Woodberry's way with straight set victories at number 2 (Daniel), number 3 (Phillip), and number 5 (Robby G.) The plot thickened significantly as the other 3 matches became tossups. Norfolk showed some determination with hard fought victories over Sam Funkhouser at number 1 and Tom Ellington at number 6. So that left Billy Hereford on the court at number 4 singles in the third set to determine whether it would be 3-3 or 4-2 Woodberry after singles. Billy fought for a 5-4 lead and needed to hold serve to win the match. In one of his best games he did a great job getting first serves in play and winning points with aggressive play to win four straight points. It was a clutch win in tough conditions.
Our doubles teams were impressive in their businesslike approach to finishing the job. We needed one win to clinch the team victory and the salty veterans Tom and Sam M. provided it with a 10-3 mastery at three doubles. Not to be outdone Rob and Phillip won easily at number two doubles. Sam and Daniel completed our first prep league victory with a 10-3 win at number 1 doubles.

       Season record  7-1
