Varsity Tennis rallies to win doubles

There were lots of heroes as Woodberry rallied to win all three doubles after losing 4 out of 6 singles. Sam Funkhouser played a great match at number 1 singles against a highly ranked senior who will play at the University of Richmond next year. After fighting hard to take the lead at 9-8 he came up a little short 11-9. Daniel Holst also played a highly ranked Middle Atlantic Section player and lost 10-6. At number 3  Phillip Taylor played well in spurts but ended up on the short end of a 10-6 score. Billy Hereford made a great comeback from down 4-1 to go up 8-7. Unfortunately the senior from Potomac came back to win the match 10-8. So Woodberry was in deep trouble. Sam Mikell provided the first glimmer of hope with a 10-3 victory at number 6. Rob Gaklloway was the last man on the court fighting to keep us in the match. In a very close match Rob came up big in the last few games and won 10-7. So we needled to win all the doubles.
Sam F. and Daniel came out smoking and won easily 10-2 at number 1 doubles. At number 3 doubles Tom and Sam Mikes recovered from a sluggish start to win 10-4. That left 2 first year players Robby G. Galloway and Phillip Taylor on the court for the decisive doubles. In a match that went back and forth Rob and Phillip broke serve at 6-5 and took control to win 10-6. It was a great early season win over one of the top teams in the state. Rob Fauntleroy and HK Hallett had a good 10-4 win at number 4 double while Peter Wilson and Tim Perry dominated their opponents 10-3 at number 5 doubles.
 Current record 5-1
