Dick Glover ’61 Inducted into State Hall of Fame

Richard C. “Dick” Glover ’61 was inducted into the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association Hall of Fame on May 8, 2017, in Richmond as part of its inaugural class. Many Woodberry friends and admirers were on hand at the ceremony to see him receive this well-deserved honor.

Mr. Glover came to Woodberry Forest School as a freshman from Charlottesville. From the beginning, he made an impact on his classmates through his personality and competitive spirit. In his senior year, he first met Woodberry’s new football coach, Harry “Red” Caughron. The two struck up a relationship that would last for the rest of Coach Caughron’s life.

After leaving Woodberry, Mr. Glover went on to Wabash College and earned a degree in political science before serving in the United States Marine Corps for five years. As a Marine, he rose to the rank of captain and flew helicopters in Vietnam. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, which is given for “heroism or extraordinary achievement while participating in an aerial flight.”

Mr. Glover returned to Charlottesville after his service in the Marines and earned a graduate degree from the University of Virginia. He had a very successful teaching and coaching career at Blue Ridge School before returning to Woodberry in 1977. Over his twenty-nine years on the faculty, he served as a history teacher, varsity wrestling coach, and freshman football coach. He was also associate director of admissions, assistant director of the Woodberry Sports Camp, and associate director of athletics. In his coaching and sports camp roles, he worked closely with Red Caughron until Red’s retirement, and then carried on many of the fine traditions Red had established.

His wrestling teams at Woodberry and Blue Ridge won 535 dual matches, twenty-five league championships (including an unbroken stretch of titles at Woodberry from 1981 to 2001), thirteen state championships and Virginia’s lone National Prep Championship. He is a recipient of Woodberry Forest’s Distinguished Service Award and in 2003 was inducted as a member of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame.

Mr. Glover lives in Orange, Virginia, and is a frequent visitor to Woodberry’s campus often found on the sideline during football games or ringside at wrestling matches.
