Organist David Goode Plays Concert

Organist David Goode played a concert in Woodberry Forest School’s St. Andrew’s Chapel on February 15, 2017. Mr. Goode has served as Organist at Eton College in the United Kingdom since 2005, and enjoys a flourishing performing career.  A graduate of Eton and King’s College, Cambridge, he has worked as Sub-Organist at Christ Church, Oxford, and Organist-in-Residence at First Congregational Church of Los Angeles and has won international competitions.  Mr. Goode also has a recording career, currently recording the complete works of Bach for Signum Records.

The performance included works by Bach, Buxtehude, and Mozart. A highlight of the evening was the piano performance of Ballade No. 1 in G Minor by Frederic Chopin (1810-1849). After playing the “Flight of the Bumblebee” from the opera The Tale of Tsar Saltan by Nikolay Rimsky-Korsakov (1844-1908) and demonstrating the piece’s seemingly impossible speed, Mr. Goode told the congregation that when travelling in the United States, he has noticed several differences between it and his home country. “Usually things in America are bigger… and faster.”  He proceeded to further impress his audience by playing the piece at an even faster tempo.  Students got an up-close view of the musician and instrument via a projection system set up specially for the program.

The Rev. Wm. Hill Brown III ’55 Chapel Concert Series, now in its fifth year, is the gift of Thomas S. Kenan III '55 and honors his Woodberry roommate Rev. Wm. Hill Brown ’55. The Kenan Fisk Organ Opus 88, designed and built by Charles Fisk, was added to St. Andrew's Chapel in 1986, commissioned by Mr. Kenan in honor of his father Frank Hawkins Kenan ’31.
